Today we head to the Townships. Typically under Apartheid, a township was a black city that was expected to exist “separate” from the white population. It was in these cauldrons of discontent that the African National Congress found its beginnings. It is also where “the epidemic” has it greatest impact. White South Africans who are hit by AIDS have access to retro-viral drugs that allow them to live with AIDS but black South Africans still lack basic economic opportunities and medical treatment much less access to lifesaving retro-virual drugs to live with their HIV or AIDS.
Mama Gladys told of stories of keeping retro-virals away from people because their malnutrion was such that the drugs would do more harm than good.
I am not aware yet of the internal maelstrom brewing within me. Guilt for the wealth I live in and a sense of hopelessness because the problem is so big. Markmann and Motherwell are the names of the townships. You might recall the name Seweto from the news or history book. Our pets live better than most of these people. The social and economic structures are so bound by culture and tradition that breaking the cycle of poverty seems almost insurmountable.
