Well I did? Actually I’ve said much worse (depending on your taste!) but the question was related to me, “Will people/seekers come back to church if Roy says ass?”
This actually would be speculation if I didn’t have an email. It was the first time that I ever crossed the line on a Sunday morning. I’d said masturbation, orgasm and various and asundry other words that disturb people. But one day I related one of my journal entries in which I asked God, “Why am I such an asshole?” It was a slip if truth be known. I just innocently related what I had written.
That week I received this, “This Sunday, I decided to make Shoal Creek my church. When you called yourself and asshole, I knew that this place was real and I wanted to be a part of it.”
I get flack from those who claim to be followers of Christ. All I know is at least one seeker stuck around.
But get this, I am about 13 centuries late. There is a hymn written in the 8th century called All Glory, Laud and Honor that includes the following verse
Be Thou, O Lord, the Rider,
And we the little ass,
That to God’s holy city
Together we may pass.Imagine singing that song in church!

OK, I’m the youth pastor at our church and the last time I preached in front of the entire congregation I referred to myself as “a competitive ass.” I didn’t even say asshole!
This fit right in line with my sermon. So, after preaching for a half hour, what was the one thing that people chose to talk about? A three letter word.
The elders didn’t approve, but I did get postitive feedback from the people who were honest enough with themselves to admit that they get stuck in the same place as I do. Some people found it refreshing and others thought it was appalling.
Glad I’m not alone.

You are not alone! You might be in the wrong place but you are not alone.
