After waiting for an appointment that didn’t show, we left for Bukwini where we arrived at 10 am. The committee was waiting for us but we needed to get the formalities out of the way so Dr. Joy could begin seeing patients.
After they reported on things they are being done we began discussions about the new school building proposed to be assembled in September by the Westside Family Church group. It was important to ensure that no obstacles would keep us from assembling the shipping container building. So the meeting was suspended so we could call the principal to come and join the discussion.
The suspension allowed us to get Joy next door to start seeing patient who had been waiting patiently for an hour. More on this later.
The principal was not found but two members of the management team did come and participate. After seeing the rooms that would be constructed, their opinion was that the principal could accept a gift without consulting higher authorities. Let’s keep praying that will be the case.
I reiterated once again that I needed their help to keep anything from getting in the way of this plan. They agreed applauded. It was now time for me to give the closing speech. I’ve learned Xhosa culture well so I started in on rousing speech, 20 minute later they all applauded and we ended the meeting.
I moved to the school to see the placement of the building. Viola! Another committee meeting. We talked and talked about where they wanted it, prevailing winds, direction of the rain, etc. and finally decided it would be perpendicular to the soccer field just behind existing Grade 6-8. I took pictures and off I went.
Joy, the doctor, Candy the pharmacist, Almarie the Supervisor of Nursing and a teacher to translate began seeing patients soon after the committee took a pause . I have Joy be a guest blogger soon to discuss the details but the air was electric because an American doctor was in town.
After 3 more hours doctoring and we were off for our evening accommodations in Port St. Johns. Not Cremorne Estates or Spotted Grunter but the Sea Castle. It was near to my heart because it is past Cremorne Estates on a dirt road that I manage to blow a tire in October of last year. Only this was much farther than I had ever gone. It was a little piece of heaven tucked in a road only a 4 X 4 could love.
The difficulty of driving down the road was the we needed to drive back out for dinner. We meet Michael Hale and his two daughters, Lumka and Lucia for dinner in the restaurant that Lumka works at, Geers. We had a delightful evening discussing Xhosas culture, Michael’s work in the location and the girl’s future.
The morning rendezvous was on the tar road just after the bridge in Port St. Johns. The girls, Lumka and Lucia, switched cars with me so Michael and I could ride talk. We drove to Lusikisiki to pick up Nomtandasa, an elderly lady, to ride with us to Selini.
We pulled into Seleni to the Daycare (read preschool) Center that Mama Christina runs. Lots of kids running around in winter clothing in and out of a rondaval. Here we quickly set Joy up in the Uniting Reformed Church as a clinic and Candy and Almaire did their thing and the girls translated.
Michael and I laid our eyes on the Care Center. It has walls up to the top of the windows and waiting on lintels to the roof can go on. Michael told me while we surveyed the site that if we had a 5-ton truck it would be built now. The frustrating part of the building is the materials being delivered. But the community is excited to have a place for the orphans to eat, store their uniforms and study. It looks like several weeks and the center should be under roof and ready for the finish work to start.
Like Bukwini, Seleni had a number of patients suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure). It seems that the high content of salt in the diet may contribute to this very common condition. The other major complaints revolve around shoulder, neck and back issues. Imagine women who carry 30 to 50 pounds on their head having should, neck and back pain. We realized that a massage therapist would be a good addition to the team!
With the Care Center nearing finish we are almost ready to execute some of the critical elements of our strategy. Having a center in a village to do good works will make it possible then to spread out into the village with the good news. As one young girl said to me, “Everyone believes in Jesus, that doesn’t mean anything here!” South Africans are innately religious and will take on anything related to the supernatural that they think will help. Unfortunately at the base of their belief system is a world filled with ancestors who mediate for the living. Jesus is just another “lucky charm” in the world of spirits. This the need to have men and women who live and work in the village to do good works and share the good news so that it takes root in their souls and takes the place of all other ideas so that it is the controlling idea in their world.
We left Seleni and headed back to Lusikisiki to drop Nomtandaso off and pick up food for Bambisana, our next adventure on Wednesday. From Lusikisiki to Port St. Johns is a winding road reminiscent of a snake ready made for a nauseating experience.
We had a brief stop at the Boxers (grocery store) in downtown Port St. Johns to purchase supper. We were buying for 6, T-bone, Prime rib, soup and some other fixings for six remember, $20! Doesn’t take much to get along in South Africa.
We headed up the road to Michael Hale’s place. The drive feels like it is straight up and you finally plane out and see an ocean vista that equals any place in the world. Michael has a two story Rondaval the sits back from the cliff and then a two story thatched building virtually hanging right off the cliff. This is the spot where he and his two adopted black African daughters live. Michael’s white if you didn’t know already!
Part of Candy’s reason for being here was to help Michael develop a dream of turning this one of a kind spot into an exclusive vacation destination. The purpose of the house would be a income-generating device for the location (South African name for a village) he lives in. He wants to offer a vacation spot with 24 hour security, chef, boat (small rubber sided, hard bottom with twin Merc 75s) with captain, car and driver along with other amenities. By providing this vacation spot he believes he can generate jobs for about 25 to 30 people in a place where unemployment is about 80%. I ask him what it is going to take to finish, money, he said! How much, he didn’t answer but I will see him Sunday and he is going to give me a figure.
Michael has a vibrant ministry with the young people. He has groups almost every night of the week coming to his house. He has organized these kids into ministry teams to care for those dying of AIDS, engages them in understanding and living out the truths of Jesus. On Monday night he teaches guitar to whoever shows up. He asked me if there was any way we could get a hold of 3 more guitars and some nylon strings to restring the guitars. I Skyped with Colin this morning inquiring if the Shoal Creek Band might want to take this on!
Dinner was to die for! Not the food although it was good; the setting. The Sea Castle Lodge was a two story concrete structure about 200 yards from the beach. It was hidden in foliage but had a small hole thru which you could view the Indian Ocean. Open fire, great friends, decent food and incredible setting provide a diversion from the tragedy that assaulted us everyday.
Michael and Lumka ate with us and left at 9 pm to run some of the girls home from Lucia’s group. So Candy and I sat listening to the waves and watching the moon glisten off the waters of the sea. A deep breath for our souls and a welcome quiet after some much people time.
Up in the morning and off to Bambisana to visit with a hospital administration team and drop some food off for a Soup Kitchen. It is frustrating dealing with the South African bureaucracy but I am beginning to realize it is just as much I, as them. We are asking the question, “What could American doctors do if they came for a short period of time?” Unfortunately the answer is nothing.
When you look at the top ten health needs in South Africa, the top 6 spots are taken by HIV/AIDS and the next two are TB. Everything else pales in comparison, except possibly malnutrition. In a 7 to 10 days visit AIDS/HIV and TB and not addressable. So now the medical mission turns more to education, dental care and possibly cataracts.
After a hour of their time we exited to get them back to their overloaded patient schedule. Moving up to the old Dutch Reformed missionary compound we met the Soup Kitchen staff and watched them to prepare for 100 children. It was amazing to watched these kids come down the hill from the school and gather in the room. The staff begins feeding these kids as they sit on benches shoulder to shoulder. Suddenly I noticed they didn’t have enough bowls and cups so once the children finished eating the plastic cup and bowl we snatched by the staff, brought to the front, washed and reused. Extremely efficient! The head mama looked at me as I was taking pictures and pointed to the pot and in broken English said, too small. She wants to feed more kids but the pot she makes her soup in is too small!
With a long drive ahead we left at 12:30 pm to make our way to East London. Driving thru the Transkei always amazes me. Beautiful brown hills, big, large, hills dotted with villages. It is a sight that just captivates your attention and it last for miles and miles and miles.
While in South Africa you get a lot of windshield time so the drive back provided ample time to download the week’s event. What awaited was another magnificent African delight, the Whitehouse at Gonubie. It is a guesthouse on a hill overlooking the ocean at Gonubie. Driving down the Gonubie Road you are ambushed by the ocean as it jumps out in front of you as if the road ends in the water.
The night was spent around dinner, discussion and awe of the scenery. Up in the morning we headed to the airport via curio shops. We left Joy at the airport to start her journey home and we started our journey to the Luttig’s farm for a couple of days with Rufus and Almarie to strategize
