Verse 1 has to be the sweetest sound of all eternity! “There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Imagine, no judgment, no guilty verdict, for simply being in the the family of Jesus.
This verse doesn’t come out of a clear and clean argument. Chapter 7 of Romans is one of the most confusing chapters in the New Testament. Paul describes his inner turmoil of epic proportions that seem to sound schizophrenic. And then erupts without resolve into verse 1 of Chapter 8. Freshness of knowing that despite my inner turmoil, self-indictment and total confusion, “There is therefore, no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
I am free so why is it that I am my worst critic. Why do I use guilt, from which I am free, to try and motivate good behavior. Father there is something wrong with my personal theology. Somewhere I learned that guilt can get things done so I use it on myself to gain discipline, accomplish tasks and attack the future. Why? Why? Why?
I see this verse and my mind screams, “YES! YES! YES! But there is a disconnect to the deepest parts of me still have a works, guilt driven mentality. For some reason the flesh in me thinks I can earn my worth and uses guilt to drive that earning mentality.
Father, I know you are on an eternal quest to convince me that I can do nothing to earn your love and in fact the guilty sentence is lifted and I am free to be your child. Why do I fail to bask in the glow of that freedom? Why is the old way, so appealing to me.
Thank you for the simplicity of this verse and the profoundness of its simplicity. “In Christ” I am innocent, forgiven, privileged, a child of the eternal King. As I breath deeply on that thought I feel a tingle in my soul. What if I lived as if that were true?
