Verse 1 comes before verse 9. How often have I wanted to change my behavior before I changed my heart. Verse 9 says Love must be sincere,…. But verse one says be a living sacrifice, or in other words join God in the renewing process and trust him.
Why is it that I revert to changing my behavior? Sure, it is control. I think I can control that so quickly I figure out how I can do it. But my heart, that is a mysterious thing and I can’t quickly affect my affections. I some times sit a wonder things. Why do I love golf so much? Can I change that? Just give it up? Would that change my affections, even though I wouldn’t play when the Master, British Open, Ryder Cup came around I think I’d still find myself in front of a TV.
What does it take to change you affections? Paul says, “a living sacrifice.” Like Issac who allow his father to tie him up Paul is asking us to crawl up on the altar. In the Old Testament the sacrifices were dead before they hit the altar! Paul is asking for something even greater, to crawl up on the altar while alive.
I often don’t position my surrender to God in terms of the completeness Paul envisions here. You can’t crawl on the altar and leave something behind. When you crawl up on the alter you have to take all of you there! Oh, I guess I can leave behind some things, but “all of me” gets up on that altar.
Father today, give me the picture of absurdity. That picture of me trying to put somethings on the altar but not everything. How absurd? This is either an all other nothing thing. No wonder I struggle deep in my heart! I believe that I would find a life that I’ve always wanted if I freely climbed on to that altar. Father the picture of trying to put a part on my on the altar, that’s what I want today.
