I’m still hard at figuring out the back half of the Great Commission Matthew 28:19-20. The front half being, Go therefore and make disciples, the back half being teaching them all things that I’ve commanded you.
There is organic feel to this command. Breaking it into a front and back is inordinately artificial. Even the construction of the passage, a more literal translation says, “As you go,” making the assumption of a J3 movement (receiver to giver, see 7journeys.org)
As a side note don’t lose the meaning of disciple in Christianese. A disciple is a learner or devotee of Jesus. You might even translate this “As you go, do everything in your power to start the learning process in people who want to follow Jesus.” A disciple in Matthew and Jesus’ mind is a Christian or a follower of Christ, not a special category of Christian. In other words, if Matthew or Jesus ran across a person calling themselves Christian and not committed to reproduction, they would question whether they were infected with the real disease.
I think it is clear that Groups (as practiced at Shoal Creek) are a part of this process but will never be the only environment that provide the nutrients for this life long learning process. New Community was a part of that (for a handful), Growth Groups (old concept) was a part of that, Men/Women’s Groups are a part, SCU was a part of that.
Thinking thru what we do well, I believe that we are a great “book” club community. I mean that in a good way. Readers are leaders, learners acquire, process and live out information. It is essential that we find ways to get Biblical truths in front of people, challenge them to process the information, stay along side as they struggle with it and celebrate their assimilation of that truth into their lives.
The “programmatic” expression of that must be an organic fusion of grassroots activity while a central nervous system (centralize leadership and resources) agitates and resources that organic fusion. We do that with the recruitment and assimilation of people to serve as Group Leaders.
Possibly we haven’t resourced leaders well and we are moving with a coaching structure and the development of resources to enhance this.
We also need to create an atmosphere in groups that values growth. Through the way a group is led and through the topics the group leader chooses, the atmosphere in the group needs to value growth, aggressively stimulate it and encourage those who don’t value it to move on.
What other experiences besides a group are necessary?
Two things seem essential, personal disciplines and group study.
• Personal disciplines,
teaching people to connect in a life giving way to God—Journaling, Solitude, Fasting
• Group Study
Four distinct opportunities
1. Books Studies Inside Out, Abba’s Child, etc that last only as long as the book then reconstitute around another book allowing new people to join.
Christian Courses has two levels of training,
2. FastTrak short internet based can be done individually or with a group
3. Certification longer more intense but can be done individually or group
4. Biblical Training has yet a third level of training at a higher level
Here’s a thought, developing Learning Communities around different topics. This is the Growth Group (old idea from SC3 history) concept plain and simple. Imagine if we had 15 to twenty same sex groups studying Inside Out or Abba’s Child, or FastTrak/Certification/Biblicaltraining, going on journaling, solitude retreats or practicing fasting together.
The group structure would be the first tier of building a learning awareness and desire, providing an ongoing relational connection but the SCU (lumping all those experiences beyond group into this terminology) would enhance this learning desire by providing opportunity to grow hearts and minds.
Here is an issue that we need to overcome, who’s going to lead these environements?
