I was recently involved in a transaction where one party wanted to give another party something and keep it anonymous. Sounds simple but I had my catagories shaken when the ideas below were presented to me.
What made me think about this was a personal rule that I have. I don’t read notes, letters, etc from anonymous sources. I feel like someone who has something to say, ought to own up to it. It was this rule that cause me to ponder the thought of giving anonymously.
So here are some thoughts from a friend.
I remember the first time we received a gift from people we barely knew. We had just moved across the country at Thanksgiving time and weren’t to get paid for six weeks. People from our new church brought us groceries to hold us over. Feelings of embarrassment were squelched as we realized how important it was not to rob these people of the blessed opportunity to give.
Over the years, we have had many such occasions to give as well as receive. What I have learned from being on the receiving end has changed how I choose to give.
There is a fear that sacrificial giving can bring too much attention to oneself resulting in puffed up ego or pride, but I contend that the greater risk is the loss of potential relationship to be gained by entering into the need of another. Money is a fleeting Band-Aid, but the relationship behind it can be eternal.
Don’t distance yourself and miss out. Join me. Allow me the dignity of a choice in this place I have not chosen. Hear what I have learned about the amazing provision of God and my responsibility in that. Let me share what a gift it has been for me to be in need.
Many an unwanted gift has been left on our doorstep and few anonymous cash donations have shown us the gracious hand of God up close, but rare is the soul who isn’t afraid of offending by offering a face to face gift of the heart. That, my friend, truly is priceless.
