Sitting alongside the Umzimbuvo River watching the muddy river flow to the Indian Ocean. Shea Poe got sick so we had to bring here to the Grunter to have a decent bathroom. She is feeling much better but the team back in Bukwini is beginninng to fall like flies. Melanie Mitchell, David and Abbey Stanley all have the dreaded sickness. If we were in Mexico we’d call it Montezuma’s revenge but they don’t have a word for it here.
Yesterday was Home visit day. Our team faced the stark poverty of Bukwini for the first time. It was fascinating to see them call their living conditions (Njenjani’s house) the Park Avenue of Bukwini. Much heart break and tears over the poverty. 18 people living in 200 sq. ft. room, 13 year old boy by himself in abject conditions all crushed our hearts.
The experience with JAM (Jabuleni Africa Mission) has been outstanding. They are all that we thought they were. Imagine Shoal Creek Interns that roam the villages of the Transkei building relationships and sharing the gospel. It is inspiring to watch!
I have been in more Committee meetings than I wish to write about but the Bukwini Committee has proved itself to be a true leadership group. There are several that standout, Enjenjani being one of them. His house has been our house, we’ve sat around his kitchen table and had coffee and shared life. His wife, kids, everything about him screams leader!
Today is our last day in Bukwini. I am in Port St. Johns to pick up Shea and Derek and take them back (100 km round trip) for the last day of home visits. We leave at 3 pm for the Grunter. Hope to be at Michael Hale’s before the sun sets.
Connectivity has been hard this trip. Vodacom has changed the mechanisms they rent and they are not as effective at getting a signal. Hope to write more tonight when we are at the Grunter.
