5 Things I’ve Learned

June 17th, 2009 · No Comments

1. What is the biggest leadership lesson you’ve learned over the past year?

Information isn’t like a virus, it sits and doesn’t spread. Just because I cast vision for the mission or its components last year doesn’t mean I don’t have to do it again this year. Even though it is hard to say the same exact thing in a different and compelling way again, that is the job of the directional leader. People need to be reminded more than they need to be informed, that is the axiom that I am learning. My job is to meet the payroll of a volunteer organization by telling them once again why we do what we do

2. What is God showing you personally?

That I am fading away! 55 this year, WOW! Don’t get me wrong I’ve got 20 to 30 good years left, if God wills but the reality that I won’t be around moves leadership development from a luxury to a necessity. The real test of what you’ve built is how long it last after you are gone. (Axiom) The only way to leave a legacy is to develop leaders who don’t just do what you do but know why you do what you do.

3. What is the top ministry challenge you’re currently facing?

If culture is created by a common language then Shoal Creek needs to develop resources that use its language. Yet, I have an aversion to re-inventing the wheel. I am struggling with the attachment of significant resources to develop internal resources that build on the language that we’ve created. I am convinced of the need despite the nagging voice inside that abhors recreating the wheel but frustrated that the resources (talent, time and ingenuity) don’t seem to be in our mix.

4. What do you do for fun?

Golf! I have this never ending pursuit of a better golf game.

5. What books are you reading?

Firece Conversations by Susan Scott
The Illusion of Leadership Piers Ibbotson
How Disruption brought Order Jean-marie Dru
The Reason for God Tim Keller
