Thirteen different groups from the US and Africa gathered in a suburb of Jeffreys Bay, South Africa to discuss what they do.
Being the convener of this meeting called the Mercy Alliance Summit, I felt a serious challenge. What the heck was I doing leading all these people on this continent! The morning was spent in learning the mission and scope of all the different ministries. We gave each team leader 20 minutes to desribe the mission, scope, values, geographical target and any other information that would allow us to know them. Obviously with 13 groups this took a long time but it was the other side of amazing to watch them get to know one another. I don’t quite understand it but I knew them better than they knew each other and most live in Africa.

We could have stopped there because the learning that took place by having them get to know one another started the engine. Before the morning was over Eastern Cape Bible School shared a need to have their 10 graduates do something while waiting to start LXP in January. It wasn’t long before Oceans of Mercy, Jabulani African Ministries and HuntSA developed a plan to send the students to Bambizana to work with orphans and begin repairing the Mission Base at Bambizana. That kind of synergy began sprouting like a virus and kept moving throw the next day.
Just before lunch we broke and had each ministry gather separately and discuss what they heard and how they might find opportunities to work together. The fruit of these discussions was the afternoon’s agenda.
Lunch was a South African delicacy Snook. Although fish are not near the top of my food list I did manage to eat a small portion of the fish. Since we were meeting at a large house it was difficult to get everyone back to the conference room. But the afternoon was to have a life of its own.
Quickly we engaged the initiatives that already had come from the Alliances work. Moses Mente now with Jabulani African Ministries share his story about moving from the Eastern Cape Bible School to LXP and then now with JAM. It was clear that from Moses’ perspective that Mercy Alliance was an attempt to stay in step with what God was doing. Moses articulated what each organization provided for him and why each experience is necessary.
Opportunities to work together ranged from JAM and LXP helping with lectures at the Bible School to Oceans of Mercy needing a full time person to facilitate the Child Sponsorship Programs in the Transkei. The biggest and probably most exciting idea to arise was to dust off the “Beat the Drum” program. Beat the Drum is a movie that was developed in conjunction with a curriculum to be delivered in the public schools. The main thrust was to teach about HIV/AIDS and build a connection to Jesus as a basis for making right decision.
Many commented that Beat the Drum was the first program they had seen in a long time to raise up African leaders. Many in the room had connection to Beat the Drum. Since the departure of Bruce Wilkinson Beat the Drum has layed dormant.
The discussion lead to a summer 2010 program where the US and Africa with bring teams to the Transkei just after the World Cup to show DVD’s of World Cup games and do Beat the Drum programs in villages. Rufus Luttig agreed to be the South African coordinator. We must now locate an American coordinator and move quickly to establish a marketing program to let people know about the opportunity.
We identified some issues with the 5 different leadership training programs. Issues like sequence, the experience don’t begin and end in such a way to facilitate a student to move thru each one seamlessly. We talked about common outreaches, focusing on the same areas, sharing resources and sharing personnel.
We ended the day and had the directors of each organization spend the dinner time together. This again proved productive. We discussed the sequencing issues. After much give and take it was decided that there are difficulties in rearranging the calendars to make the experience flow seamlessly. Instead we decided to organize gap experiences that would allow those leaving one experience to maintain momentum until they are able to engage another experience.
We agreed to develop one face to potential funding sources. In effect the pipeline from the Bible School to CPx has grown to make sense to everyone so the idea of attempting to raise money for the complete experience follows suit In theory is 100 students were in the pipeline and each experience averaged $300 a month of cost per student, it would take $750,000 a year to produce high contagious leaders for Africa.
Noting the power in relating together, we designed a yearly outreach that would put all of the students together shoulder to shoulder focusing on the Transkei. The first will be the post World Cup outreach.
The morning brought a fresh day and a night for the thoughts of yesterday to germinate. We began by spending time thanking God for what was happening our ministries. Again hearing all that God was doing was worth the gathering.
After praying, we brainstormed future agenda items.

We discussed operating under the Mercy Alliance “brand” so that those in the Transkei would regard whatever team that’s there in light of all that has happened in the past. There was an wave of optimisn that developed as everyone begin to think about seeing themselves in light of the bigger picture.
We last issue we talked about was the power of story and the need to learn to tell their stories more frequently. We discussed the use of Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and web sites. We inventoried their ability to create and sustain these communication devices. We talked about the need for story tellers to come to their aid and pull the stories instead of them having to push them.
Our final task was to pray. We put Penial and Vera in the middle of the room and prayed for their needs, students and future. I had intended for each ministry to have this opportunity but I failed to communicate very well so after praying I lost control of the meeting and we transitioned into lunch which was the last activity of the summit.
