I had intended for each ministry to have this opportunity but I failed to communicate very well so after praying I lost control of the meeting and we transitioned into lunch which was the last activity of the summit.
We left Jeffreys Bay in the afternoon and headed to Pt. Alfred for the Eastern Cape Bible School. We arrived on Thursday evening at our accommodations on the beach. At night the waves were so loud it almost kept you awake!
Friday for me was a day to download the Summit and make sense of what I’d just experienced. The beach is a great place to do that but it is winter here so I settle for seeing the beach from my room rather than being at it.
Saturday we took the Montana group to Grahamstown to look at the property we are trying to buy for the Bible School and then on to the National Festival of the Arts. It was some what disappointing given that it was a “national” festival.
It was interesting to interact with the group we were with, a nurse, two pastors, a denturist, a professional bass fishermen most from Montana and one from New York. I almost forgot a Tanzanian.
Sunday was the graduation at the Eastern Cape Bible School at the Port Alfred Christian Center. Never have I been up and down to a platform as much. Introduced, asked to speak, pray, be thanked, I should have gotten aerobic points for my peripatetic activity.
Our Montana visitors left us for the Luttig’s farm on Sunday afternoon. We spent a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Monday was a most interesting day that begin at 3 am. I chose to drive to the Port Elizabeth Airport to deliver the Tanzanian and his New York pastor friend. 70 miles one way in the dark on two lane highway on the left side of the road is enough exercise for one day. Both legs were uneventful and upon my return, I found my fellow travelers in bed.
We left Pt. Alfred for Grahamstown and stopped in Bathurst for breakfast at the Whistle Inn. The Luttig children, Justus and Inga were with us. It was a great breakfast answering their questions about the US, education, leadership and a dozen other things.
As we were leaving Bathurst we got word that the Jabulani African Ministries group was stranded in Grahamstown with car issues. We met them at the garage and took them to the Luttig’s house. The only complication was that the Luttig’s had rented out their house to a group of British dancers in town for the National Festival. They did leave the office out of the rental so we put the JAMers in their and left for East London to pick up friends who were coming in that night.
On the way to East London Rufus and Almarie looked like stock traders on their cell phones trying to sort out the JAMers. The truck was not easily repairable so the JAMers caught a bus to Umtata then the Jungle Monkey to Port St. Johns.
We checked into our B & B in East London and went to the airport to pick up our friends. There is one thing about Africa that seems to be on time and sometimes early, South African Airways. True to form they arrived 15 minutes early!
Back to the B & B to sleep quickly for the drive to the Transkei. Up early, breakfast and off to the land beyond the Kei River. Slowly the terrain begins to roll and twist into the unique region called the Transkei. On the way up Africa just developes. Rufus calls a guy named Lawrence who has a music ministry in Umtata and wants to meet us. We don’t have time to meet so we suggest he go with us to Bukwini and we’ll pay his cab fare back to Umtata.
We meet at the Sasol station in Umtata and he brings Mava. Mava is a registered nurse who used to work for the government but now has started her own organization which is a clinic and outreach to the community. We get to know them on our way up.
By noon we were at Ngengani’s house in Bukwini where a large crowd expected our arrival.
The bain of my work in Africa is committee meetings and upon my arrival in Bukwini I was ushered into a committee meeting. Funny thing on my way from Grahamstown to East London I passed a sign for a small river. In South Africa these bodies of water are referred to as a drift. This particular river/creek was called Committees. So the sign read “Committees Drift.” And right on que this committee drifted from one thing to another.
We finally got things straight but not before I took the opportunity to share the story of God leaving heaven and coming to earth to build a bridge for humanity to reconnect with God.
Outside the hut where we were meeting were about 30 to 40 mamas. Mama is a term reserved for older women. They had come to demonstrate the need for more help in Bukwini. I spoke to them letting the know that our hearts are big but our wallets are not near as big. I told them I would take the message back to my friends in America and let them know of the need.
After my stump speech we headed off to visit 4 different homes. The first home housed two sisters and a brother all in their 20s or 30s. The brother laid outside the hut and never engaged us but one sister was clearly in charge. She took us inside to meet her other sister who claimed she was suffering from TB and show us her medicine which was for symptoms of AIDS. She was adamant. Mava works with her and determines she is dying of AIDS so we move from medical to spiritual work and begin to ask her if she understands who Jesus is and what he has done for her. She claims she does and that Jesus heals. It is clear she fears dying so we pray for her and leave some food behind.
The next home is a grandmother and grandfather who are caring for two grandchildren. The house is very clear with a bed which is unusual for a hut. The children get grants and they also receive a food packet from Shoal Creek.
The third hut or huts houses 15 people none older than 22. The 22 year old mother of 3 seems to be the ring leader. When we arrive they are making mud/straw bricks for a 3 hut on their compound.
We ask the young lady if she will show us her hut and she obliges. She is clearly embarrassed by our presence. She feels the weight of her poverty in the presence of so many white people. The power of the embarrassment is broken when Almarie Luttig asks to meet the women who keeps this house looking so nice and clean. While she is asking Almarie moves forward and gives the young lady a hug. After several hugs from the other women she warms up and begins to smile.
She is the head of household to her 3 children 3 or four other younger brothers and sisters and cousins whose parents and grandparents have died. We pray with her and leave her a gift of some food and move one to the final visit.
The last visit is a quandary. The committee member takes us to the home of a young girl who is strikingly beautiful and bashful. After a few minutes we figure out she lives alone because her husband is in Capetown working. We go in to her hut and pray with her. The strange thing about the Xhosa is that when they pray everyone prays out loud at the same time. So Lawrence, Mava, and the girl all prayed simultaneously.
Back to the van and onto Port St. Johns for the evening. After a rather disappointing dinner at the Spotted Grunter we turned in for the night.
The plan, Seleni for the Child Care Center then on to Bambizana to see the Westside team working with the kids. So we need to eat breakfast quick and get on the road. While at breakfast we make real coffee in a French press and a fellow guest at the Spotted Grunter remarks loudly, “I smell real coffee.”
South Africans as a lot are a loud people especially the men. Our loud and gregarious friend began to ask who we were, what we were doing, etc. As we returned the questions we discovered that he had hired a boat to see the sardine runs and wanted to know if we had ever seen it. With the answer, “No,” he immediately ask if we’d like to ride on his boat, turning to leave saying as he left the door, “I’ll check with the boat driver, be right back.” Rufus made the decision by turning to all of us, “We must do this!”
We had planned a boat ride with Michael Hale on Friday but had already cancelled it. So our friend returned with a smile on his face asking us to hurry up and eat breakfast the boat is leaving in 5 minutes. Breakfast had yet to arrive!
The next few minutes were frantic as we had to think about what we were wearing and would it with stand a day on the sea, slam down breakfast and get to the dock to get on the boat.
It seems surreal to think that at 7:05 were were headed to Seleni and at 7:30 we were headed out to sea!
I won’t try to describe what happened on the sea. You need to google “sardine run or bait balls.” To sum up the day we say Humpback whales, Brudus whales, two types of dolphins and birds kamikaze diving into the ocean. The whole thing gave new meaning to chaos.
The highlight of the experience came at the end when we spotted a Humpback. The captain of the boat (20 ft rubber sided craft) put us on a course to intercept the whales. They surfaced about 40 ft from the boat then went right under us. Think that they had gone on by we sat and watch the horizon to see them move away.
It is hard to put into words the feelings of having a 30 ton animal turn around and check you out. While watching the horizon 20 feet from the boat our friend surfaced and blew and began to circle as if to be stalking us. Surfacing again in front and on our left side and giving us a view of his tail as if we were in a Pacific Life commercial. We couldn’t have ask for a better end to the day. Especially when our friend chose to move on rather than consider us an oversized plankton.
The evening consisted of drying out or soaked clothes, sighting seeing from Michael Hale’s cliff home and dinner at a local restaurant.
Thursday was on to Seleni for sure where we met the smile of Mama Christiana and her 50 kids. We arrived just as the porridge was being served. We handed out some hats made by ladies at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and hung with the kids while they ate.
One of the Mercy Alliance partners, Stellenberg Community Church in Capetown was there for the week. As they showed up we had a chance to hear about why they come up each year. Sam the team leader thanked us for part in building the center and Rufus returned the thanks for their part in encouraging and serving Mama Christina so while well.
While the Stellenberg group continued with their program we left to find the Westside group at Qwa Dick.
A coalition of Mercy Alliance partners were busy at Qwa Dick playing with the children, Oceans of Mercy, Eastern Cape Bible School and Jabulani African Ministries. The beauty of this alliance is the synergy created by the different resources that each group brings to bear on a village.
Howard a Bible School graduate was relating to a mentally challenge teenager, Westside folks were managing the kids on some blow up devices and Oceans of Mercy folks were busy making lunch for everyone.
